Mesh out of Shotgun Empty Base lines up all five eligible receivers wide with no back in the backfield, and the route diagram shows two shallow crossers criss-crossing underneath at the same depth to create natural traffic against man defenders. The outside receivers on both sides run deep comebacks (the go-and-break-back routes at the top of the screen), while the inside slot runs a deep in-cut over the middle that acts as the third level read behind the mesh point. This is a classic man beater built on rub concepts, and the primary read progression starts with the mesh crossers underneath, works to the deep in-cut if a linebacker or safety jumps the mesh, and finishes with the backside comeback as a hot outlet against man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with no safety help over the middle is the biggest weakness this play attacks, since the crossers will consistently pick off defenders in man leverage. Watch for a linebacker or nickel defender sitting in a hook zone underneath, since that defender can jump the mesh crossers if the quarterback throws too early. Cover 3 or Cover 1 with a robber safety can be a problem because the robber sits right in the crossing lane and baits the quarterback into a turnover. Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties, which usually means the comeback routes on the outside will have a tighter window and the mesh underneath becomes the safer read. Post-snap, key the near linebacker's first two steps: if he sprints to the flat or blitzes, the mesh crossers open up instantly for an easy completion.

Usage Tips

Use Mesh on third and medium or third and long when you expect man coverage since the crossing routes are designed to rub off defenders in man leverage.

Check pre-snap for single high safety looks or man alignment with cornerbacks in press, both of which signal the mesh crossers will have room to work.

If the defense shows two high shells or soft zone, hot route one of the crossers into a deeper sit route or check to a zone beater like Dig Curl Read or Y Cross instead.

User the receiver running the deep in-cut route to manually work him away from a lurking linebacker if you see a defender sitting in the underneath zone.

Pair Mesh with Stick or Curl Flats in your play-calling sequence since both attack similar areas but punish different coverage shells, keeping the defense guessing between man and zone answers.
