Breakdown

Y Post is a five man route empty concept out of Shotgun Empty Base with 11 personnel. The inline TE (Y) runs the deep post as the primary read, breaking from the numbers toward the middle of the field off a vertical stem, while the outside receiver to that side runs an underneath drag/out crossing the field. On the opposite side, the two receivers run a mesh style cross combo underneath and one receiver on the far boundary breaks outside on a shallow out. This is a man beater designed to isolate the TE on a linebacker or safety in coverage on the post while the crossing routes create natural picks against man coverage, and it also has zone beater properties since the post sits down between the deep zones and the underneath crossers stretch zone defenders horizontally.

Defensive Reads

Presnap check safety depth and alignment, if you see two deep safeties splitting the field the post is more likely to be taken away and underneath routes become the answer. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers who sink hard to the post threaten to undercut the route so the crossers underneath become the outlet. Key the cornerback on the shallow out route, aggressive corners jumping the out leave the crossing routes open behind them in man coverage. Post snap identify any user controlled defender lurking in the middle of the field, that defender can sit on the post route and bait a turnover if the quarterback throws on rhythm without checking him. Against zone blitzes, watch for the underneath crossers getting picked up by hot dropping linebackers, if both crossers are covered the post is the only remaining answer versus the rush.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify if the defense is showing single high or two high safety shell, since the Y post hunts the middle void left in single high man or zone coverage.

Look for the TE matched up on a linebacker, that mismatch is the number one read and should be thrown on time before the safety can rotate over.

If the defense shows two high shells with safeties sitting on the post, check down to the underneath crossers or the shallow out on the boundary since the picks will spring someone open against man coverage.

Use this play on early downs or medium to long yardage situations where you can afford the deeper developing post route to hit versus zone drops.

Pair this play with Y Cross or Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between the post shot and quicker underneath completions off similar formation and route action.
