Y Corner is run from Shotgun Empty Base with 11 personnel, spreading five receivers across the formation with no back in the backfield. The right side shows a TE running a corner route breaking hard to the sideline off a vertical stem, with two receivers underneath running shallow crossers, one settling in the flat and the other clearing the middle. On the left side, one receiver runs a deep vertical while the other cuts underneath on a shallow drag, giving you a natural high low read away from the Y Corner concept. The primary read starts with the TE corner route attacking the boundary, then works down to the underneath crossers if the corner window is closed.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety alignment: two high safeties signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, which puts a defender in the deep quarter that the corner route is attacking, so expect a contested throw. Single high safety alignment with press corners suggests man coverage, which is where the TE corner route wins most consistently against a linebacker or safety in coverage. Post-snap, key the flat defender and curl to flat zone defender, since a fast flat drop can undercut the underneath crossers and force the quarterback to hold the ball longer for the corner to develop. Watch for a user lurking underneath in the shallow crossing routes, as aggressive users will jump the drag and crosser combo looking for a big hit or interception. Nano blitzes and quick pressure up the middle are the biggest threat here since the corner route takes time to develop, so identify blitz packages pre-snap and be ready to check into a quicker hot route or throw the flat route as a checkdown.
Usage Tips
Use this play on third and medium to third and long when you need to attack the sideline against single high coverage. Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing zone with deep half safeties or man press on the TE, since the corner route wins big against man coverage with no safety help over the top. Hot route the backside shallow crosser into a deeper dig if you are seeing heavy underneath zone drops clogging the short middle. Pair this play with Y Post or Stick Z Post in your play-calling sequence to keep defenders honest on whether the TE is breaking outside or inside off the same stem. Against Cover 3, look to the flat route underneath the corner as a quick outlet since the corner route will be sitting in the deep third defender's zone.
