Breakdown
Stick N Nod is a five-man empty route concept out of Shotgun Empty Base with 11 personnel spread across the formation. To the closed side, the outside receiver runs a deep vertical while the inside slot receiver stems a stick route and cuts flat underneath it, forming a natural high-low read. On the strong side, the TE runs a nod (a short hitch that settles then works vertically off the linebacker), the outside slot runs a quick flat, and the far outside receiver takes off on a deep vertical, giving the QB a five-level stretch from underneath flat to deep shot. With no running back in the backfield, this is a pure pass concept designed to attack both man and zone coverage by combining stick and flat conflict reads with two vertical clear-outs on the perimeter.
Defensive Reads
Watch for two deep safeties presnap, which signals the defense is prepared to eliminate the vertical shots on both sideline, forcing you into the stick and nod underneath reads. If linebackers show heavy blitz alignment with no clear zone drop responsibility, expect pressure off the edge or through the middle, so get the ball out quickly to the flat or stick route. A single high safety rotating hard to one side of the field tells you which vertical route has one on one leverage against a cornerback, favoring a deep shot to that sideline. Track the underneath linebacker assigned to the TE nod route, if he sinks too deep in zone, the nod route will settle in front of him for an easy completion. Man coverage with the corner playing outside leverage on the stick receiver opens up the inside cut on the stick route, while press man on the flat receiver signals a quick pick opportunity for the nod route behind it.
Usage Tips
Presnap identify whether the defense is showing two-high or single-high safety, since the two deep verticals on both edges will pull safeties out of the box and open the stick and nod combo underneath.
Key the nickel or slot corner over the stick receiver, if he sits at depth in zone, work the nod route behind him for the conflict read.
Against man coverage, the flat route and nod create natural separation off linebacker leverage, so hot route the nod into a quicker option if you see a linebacker sitting directly on the TE at the snap.
This play works best on third and short to medium distance where the stick and flat combo can pick up the sticks quickly while still keeping the deep shot alive if the coverage bites underneath.
Pair this with Stick or Curl Flats earlier in a series to condition the defense to jump the short routes, then come back to Stick N Nod or Y Corner to hit the vertical shots once safeties start creeping up.
