Shock is a five-wide route concept out of Empty Base that stresses the field with a switch release verticals combo on one side and a pivot out on the other. The outside receiver at the top runs a corner route while the inside slot runs a vertical seam, creating a natural switch release that clears space for whichever defender bites on the shorter route. On the near side, the inside receiver runs a shallow out while the outside receiver works a pivot back across the field, and the backside receiver runs a deep drag against the grain to give the quarterback a check down option away from the pressure. The primary read starts with the corner and seam combo working the deep half, then works down to the pivot and shallow out on the near side if the safety shell takes away the vertical shot.
Watch the corner over the top receiver at the snap, if he sinks with the vertical seam and abandons his zone the corner route on the switch release is going to come open. Key the flat defender on the near side, if he sits on the shallow out the pivot route underneath him becomes the quarterback's answer. Man coverage teams that press outside can get beat easily on the switch release since the natural pick action creates a rub, so look for the defense to bail into zone or play soft press to counter. Zone defenses with a deep half shell like Cover 2 or Cover 4 struggle to cover the seam and corner combo, but a true Cover 3 with a deep middle defender sitting in the throwing lane can take away the seam read entirely. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge will collapse the pocket quickly, so track whether the backside drag route breaks open in time as the checkdown before the quarterback is forced into a bad throw.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties bail into a shell the corner route on the switch release has a strong chance to win against Cover 2 or Cover 4 because it attacks the seam between the corner and safety.
Use the deep drag on the backside as your answer against blitz heavy looks, it clears out fast and gives you a quick outlet if the protection breaks down.
Motion the near side receiver before the snap to get a free release read on man versus zone, if the defender follows across the formation you know it is man coverage and can lean on the pivot route to create separation.
Pair this play with Four Verticals or Y Cross earlier in a series so defenses start jumping the deep shots, then come back to Shock later in the drive to hit the pivot and shallow out combo for an easier completion once the defense is playing off the ball.
Best used on second and medium to long or first down shots when you want a vertical stretch play but still have a checkdown built in against pressure looks.
