Breakdown

Four Verticals out of Empty Base Shotgun sends all five eligible receivers vertical, with three outside receivers running straight seam or fade routes up the numbers and the inside slot receiver on the right running a skinny post that breaks toward the middle of the field. The fifth receiver, aligned inside left, runs a short out and up route that settles into a corner adjustment before climbing vertical, giving the quarterback a stretch across all three levels deep. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater designed to overload the deep zones, with the primary read starting on the post breaking to the middle void before working outside to the seam and fade routes based on safety rotation.

Defensive Reads

Diagnose two deep safeties presnap, this signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and tells you the post route sitting in the middle seam will have the biggest window against a single deep defender. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into the middle hook zone you are likely facing Cover 3 and should work the ball to the outside seam or fade instead of the post. Identify user controlled defenders lurking underneath, a defender spying the shallow drag or sitting in the flat can jump the short out route on the inside left receiver, so account for that before checking it down. This play struggles against Cover 4 quarters coverage where safeties can sink onto vertical routes late and disguise their drop, since the four vertical stems remove any natural picks or rubs to shake coverage. Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage on the outside can be exploited if the corners are playing off, but a well timed nano blitz or five man pressure package can collapse the pocket before any of these deep routes fully develop.

Usage Tips

Check safety alignment before the snap, two deep safeties splitting the field wide open tells you to attack the post since the middle of the field is voided in Cover 2.

If you see a single high safety, work your eyes to the seam route away from the safety's leverage since Cover 3 corners will have their backs turned running with the outside verticals.

Hot route the checkdown or short out route into a deeper crosser if you are facing zone heavy defenses that sit their linebackers in shallow drop zones.

Pair this play with Y Cross or Drag Double Spot on early downs to bait linebackers into jumping underneath routes, then hit them with Four Verticals once they start cheating on shorter combos.

Best used on second or third and long when you need explosive plays, since the route concept takes time to develop and needs a clean pocket from empty protection.
