Defensive Reads

If the defense runs Cover 3 with a hard flat defender, the underneath crossing out routes on both sides become the counter read since they attack the void between the flat and hook zones. Look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the empty backfield means no protection help and the quarterback must get through his progression fast before pressure arrives. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties will squeeze the corner route hard, so identify this look pre-snap and prioritize the underneath crossers instead of forcing the deep shot.

Usage Tips

Attack single high safety looks and man coverage first since the corner route on the right side is the main money throw against a trailing corner.

Use pre-snap motion or shifts to identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 1, since the deep corner route will separate hard against outside leverage corners in man.

If the defense shows two high safeties, hot route the corner runner into a comeback or hitch to avoid throwing into the deep half defender's zone.
