Quick Reference

Breakdown

986switch is a vertical stretch concept out of Empty Base Shotgun that puts three receivers into a switch release package designed to confuse man coverage assignments at the snap. The switch action creates natural rub and pick opportunities against man defenders while the underlying 9 (go), 8 (deep dig or corner), and 6 (drag or dig) route numbers stretch zone defenders vertically and horizontally. This is a man beater first with zone beater qualities on the backside drag, and the primary read progression starts with the deep switch release on the play side, moves to the intermediate breaking route in the middle of the field, and finishes with the underneath crosser as a checkdown against heavy pressure.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a corner or safety jumping the switch release early, that indicates a robber or lurk defender sitting in the throwing lane expecting the rub route. Read linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers dropping late into the middle third can undercut the intermediate breaking route before it clears the numbers. Diagnose two high safety shells presnap, if they stay true to their half after the snap this play struggles to find a vertical window and you should check down early. Key any disguised blitz where a slot defender crashes downhill instead of matching the switch release, since that leaves the underlying crosser wide open against man coverage. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 with a hard flat defender sitting outside, the switch concept gets picked off at the numbers, so look immediately to the backside drag or checkdown instead of forcing the deep read.

Usage Tips

Identify press man or trail technique pre-snap since the switch release is designed to beat exactly that with natural traffic between the two releasing receivers.

Check safety depth before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep with no rotation this play forces one of them to declare late on the switch concept.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you diagnose Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells to give yourself a fast underneath answer instead of forcing the deep shot.

Use this play on early downs or obvious passing situations like second and long to bait aggressive man blitzes, then follow it up with Slot Pick Screen or Fk Screen Sluggo to punish defenses that overcommit to the switch release.

Pair 986switch with Stick Z Post or Y Corner in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key on the switch action alone and has to respect multiple deep shot concepts from the same personnel look.
