Shotgun Trio puts three receivers to one side with the running back offset in the backfield and a single receiver isolated on the backside, giving you a true trips look out of 11 personnel. Unlike balanced sets in Shotgun that split receivers two by two, Trio forces the defense to declare a strength pre-snap. If the defense rotates a safety or slides a linebacker to the trips side, the backside X is left one on one with no help, and you can attack that leverage immediately. If they stay balanced, you have a numbers advantage on the trips side and every underneath concept in the set becomes a soft-zone chunk play.
Read the trips-side alignment first. If the defense only puts two defenders over three receivers, hit Stick, Snag Slot Out, or Trips Flood for a quick completion before the safety rotates.
Against single-high, work the backside X on Flanker Dig or Steeler Dig, or hot route him to a fade and throw over the top when the safety commits to the trips side.
Use Jet motion pre-snap on Jet HB Zone and Jet HB Off Tackle to identify man versus zone, then check into Inside Zone or HB Counter if the linebackers overflow.
On third and medium, Mesh and Curl Flat are your safest man beaters. Block the back and read the crosser first, then the sit route.
Mix in HB Slip Screen and HB Draw after you have shown deep concepts a few times, because the linebackers will be dropping and the flat defenders will be widening with your trips-side routes.
