Breakdown

Inside Zone out of Shotgun Trio is a pure zone run play with the HB aligned next to the QB and three receivers stacked wide to one side. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, stepping in unison to the play side and working double teams up to the second level before climbing to linebackers, which gives the running back a horizontal read to pick his crease. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so there are no route combos to beat man or zone coverage. The primary read progression belongs to the ball carrier: press the play side gap, read the double team block, and cut based on how the frontside defensive tackle and linebacker flow.

Defensive Reads

Diagnose the box count immediately after the snap and identify if the defense is running a 4-3 under or 3-4 odd front, since Inside Zone gets stonewalled by heavy A gap blitzes and stacked fronts. Watch the frontside defensive tackle to see if he is getting doubled and driven off the ball, that is your cutback key as the runner. Key the middle linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow near the line he can shoot a gap and blow up the play before the double team forms. User the play side linebacker as the defense to force a two-way go on the running back, taking away both the bend and cutback lanes. Watch for edge defenders crashing down hard, which signals a run blitz or gap exchange scheme designed to spill the ball outside where extra defenders wait.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm you have a numbers advantage before snapping this play.

Attack Inside Zone against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box, especially when the defense shows a two high shell that pulls a safety out of run support.

Pair this play with Jet HB Off Tackle and HB Counter from the same Trio set so defenders keying on outside zone flow get gashed when you cut it back inside.

Manually control the fullback or nearest lead blocker if your scheme has one to seal off the first unblocked linebacker at the second level.

Call this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay on schedule, then leverage the run action into Read Option or RPO Alert Bubble later in a drive to keep linebackers hesitant.
