Steeler Dig is a dropback pass concept out of Shotgun Trio 11 personnel that attacks the intermediate middle of the field with a dig route as the primary target, paired with underneath crossers and a vertical clear-out to stress zone drops. This is a zone beater at its core, designed to exploit the soft spot between the linebackers and safeties in Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells, though the dig can also sit down in the window against off man coverage. The primary read progression starts with the dig route breaking across the middle, works down to the underneath crosser as the secondary option, and checks down to the flat or backfield outlet if both are covered.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify two-high versus single-high safety shells, single-high alignments often signal Cover 3 or Cover 1 which puts a linebacker or safety in the dig's throwing lane. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they carry deep into hook zones they can rob the dig route, so check for a user-controlled defender sitting in that window before pulling the trigger. This play struggles against Cover 4 match zones with disciplined linebackers who wall off the middle, and it gets shut down hard by Cover 6 or pattern-match schemes where the dig runner is passed off cleanly between levels. Key the strong safety and mike linebacker post-snap, if they both drive downhill on shorter routes it opens a throwing window for the dig to sit down between levels. Beware of double A-gap or overload blitzes from this personnel grouping, if the protection cannot pick up extra rushers the quarterback will not have time to let the dig develop, so have a quick alert route ready as a hot route answer.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second and medium to long or third and medium when you need a chain mover that attacks the middle third of the field.
Identify the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth, if you see two deep safeties sitting at 10-12 yards this is a great look for the dig to sit in the Cover 2 or Cover 4 hole.
Hot route the underneath crosser into a spot route if you are facing heavy Cover 3 sink drops to give yourself a quicker outlet against zone defenders driving on the dig.
Pair Steeler Dig with Steeler Slot Out or Snag Slot Out earlier in a drive to condition the defense to expect quick underneath throws, then hit the dig over the top once linebackers start jumping short routes.
Against man coverage, motion the slot receiver pre-snap to confirm man or zone, if the defender follows across the formation you know to trust the dig against man leverage and throw with anticipation before the break.
