RPO Alert Bubble is an RPO out of Shotgun Trio that gives the quarterback a pre-snap and post-snap alert between an inside run and a bubble screen to the slot receiver. The diagram shows the outside receiver running a quick out that clears the boundary while the slot receiver sits underneath on the bubble, with the QB reading the alert key (yellow arrow) to decide between handing off or throwing the screen. It is built to beat aggressive run fits by attacking overpursuing linebackers with the bubble, and the primary read progression is: identify the alert defender, then bubble screen first before checking the run.
Defensive Reads
Watch the slot defender or nickel corner pre-snap, if they are lined up soft or off the ball they are likely sitting on the bubble read. Key the alert defender's first step after the snap, if they crash inside on the run fake the bubble is wide open. Man coverage with no underneath help leaves the bubble receiver in space against a trailing defender, favoring the offense. Zone coverage with a linebacker sinking under the bubble route can jump the throw, so the QB must trust the run if that defender stays home. Blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge can be neutralized by pulling the ball early since the bubble screen beats overloaded fronts.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the slot defender is crashing down on the run or sitting in the bubble throw window before the snap.
If the linebacker over the bubble receiver widens or blitzes, pull the ball and throw the bubble immediately for a numbers advantage.
Use this play on early downs in run heavy personnel to keep defenses honest and force linebackers to respect both the run and the quick game.
Pair this with Inside Zone or HB Off Tackle from the same set so the defense cannot key on run fits without opening up the bubble throw.
Against teams that spam run blitzes, hot route the outside receiver into a hitch to give the QB a second quick answer if the bubble lane gets clogged.
