Verticals out of Shotgun Trio sends both outside receivers on vertical stems up the sideline while the slot receiver runs a deep corner route up the seam, stretching the field into thirds against zone or attacking man leverage down the field. The inside receiver from the bunch cuts across the middle on a deep dig, sitting behind linebackers and in front of deep safeties as a crossing window. The HB stays in to help protect while the offensive line sets a standard pass blocking scheme, giving the quarterback time to work through his vertical progression from outside in. This is a classic four verts concept built to beat Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by overloading zone defenders with more routes than they have deep help.
Defensive Reads
Read the safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are shallow or crashing the box this play has a high probability of hitting a vertical shot over the top. Watch for a user-controlled deep safety flowing toward the corner route side, that flow opens the opposite vertical for the quarterback. Track the middle linebacker's drop, a shallow or lazy drop leaves the deep dig route wide open in the honey hole versus Cover 3. Man coverage without safety help over the top gets exposed by the vertical stems since receivers stack corners early in their release. Disciplined two-deep safeties who stay true to their landmarks and a linebacker who sinks fast into the deep middle window are what shut this play down, forcing the quarterback to check down to the HB.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify two high safeties versus single high before the snap since that dictates which vertical route becomes the primary target.
Against Cover 2, target the seam route running the corner because it splits the safeties before they can get over the top.
Against Cover 3, work the deep dig crossing route since it sits in the hole between the deep third defenders and underneath zone droppers.
Use hot routes to convert the outside vertical into a comeback or hitch if you see press man with no safety help, giving you a quick sideline throw versus aggressive corners.
Pair this play with Steeler Dig or Mills Y Corner in the same set so defenses cannot sit on the four verts shell after seeing it once, forcing them to respect intermediate crossers too.
Best called on second and long or third and long when you need a explosive play and have time in the pocket to let routes develop downfield.
