Scat out of Shotgun Trio (11 personnel) is a five man route concept built to attack zone coverage with high low reads on both sides of the field. To the boundary the outside receiver runs a go route to clear space while the slot receiver runs a quick hitch underneath, and the fullback or third receiver adds a short pivot route into the flat as a checkdown. To the field side the TE runs a seam bender up the hash while the flanker works an out and up flat to corner combo, and the RB slides out to the flat on a check release. The primary read starts with the seam bender on the field side, then works down to the flat routes if the safety squats over the top, making this a zone beater with built in horizontal stretch on both edges.
Cover 3 defenses struggle with this concept because the flat defender cannot cover both the hitch and the flat route to the same side Cover 2 shells invite the seam route from the TE to sit in the soft spot between the corner and safety, watch for the safety collapsing late User controlled lurk defenders sitting on the seam route can bait a quarterback into the flat route underneath, so track where the human defender flows after the snap Man coverage with no safety help over the top allows the boundary go route to win vertically, look for press corners cheating outside leverage Blitz heavy fronts with six or more rushers get exposed if the RB check releases into the flat quickly, since that becomes the hot route answer against extra pressure
Check the safety shell before the snap, if you see two high safeties the seam route from the TE has room to sit down in the void behind the linebackers
Against single high looks, prioritize the boundary go route to hold the deep defender and work the underlying hitch and flat combo for easy yards
Use hot routes to convert the RB flat route into a check and release protection call if you sense pressure off the edge on obvious passing downs
This play pairs well with HB Draw and Inside Zone from the same set since the pre-snap look mirrors the run action and keeps defenders honest
Best called on second or third and medium when you need a horizontal stretch concept that has both a quick answer and a shot play off play action
