HB Off Tackle out of Shotgun Trio is a straightforward gap run play with the HB taking a handoff and reading the blocking surface to hit the off tackle hole. The diagram shows three receivers stacked wide with no route assignments drawn, meaning this is a pure run design rather than a play-action or RPO look, and the offensive line and TE will down block or seal the edge to create a running lane. Primary read progression is the HB pressing the mesh point, reading the play side tackle and TE block, and choosing to bounce outside or cut it up inside based on how the edge defender is blocked.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap, identify if the defense has stacked the box with an extra linebacker or safety cheating down, since that immediately signals they are keying the run from this formation. Watch cornerback depth, if corners are playing deep with no underneath run support you have a numbers advantage at the point of attack. Post snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker to see if they are getting sealed or if they are shooting the gap to blow up the play before the mesh point. This run struggles against nano blitzes and gap exchange stunts where the defensive line crosses assignments, so if you see a user controlled defender crashing down hard pre snap, expect a disruptive front. Cover 3 and single high looks with an extra run defender in the box are the toughest shells to attack with this play, while base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts without extra help are where this run hits hardest.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs when you want to establish tempo and force the defense to respect the run before dialing up Jet HB Off Tackle or HB Counter as complementary looks out of the same Trio formation. Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more defenders in the box this run is risky and you should consider hot routing a receiver to a quick out or peeking at Read Option instead. Against defenses that consistently walk down a linebacker to the play side, use motion or check to HB Draw from the same set to keep the defense guessing. Bounce the run outside if you see the defensive end squeezed hard by the TE block, otherwise trust the interior blocking and stick it up inside. Pair this play with Steeler Dig or Snag Slot Out on passing downs so the defense cannot key run based on personnel or set alone.
