Watch linebacker depth and alignment before the snap, since linebackers stacked too tight to the box are prime candidates to overflow with the jet motion and vacate the off tackle gap. Key the strong safety in the box versus a two high shell, because a single high safety alignment often signals run support that can clog the off tackle lane if not accounted for by the blocking scheme. Post-snap, track whether the user controlled defender bites on the jet motion fake, since that overpursuit is exactly what this play is designed to exploit for a cutback lane. This play struggles against gap sound fronts with disciplined defensive ends who stay home and squeeze the tackle box, so avoid calling it into odd fronts with a clear five technique holding the edge. Blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge or overload the point of attack can beat this play before the blocking scheme sets, so check pre-snap for outside linebacker or slot corner blitz alignment.
Usage Tips
Use jet motion pre-snap to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or defensive back to follow the motion man, which confirms man coverage or a spy assignment and opens the off tackle lane. This play works best on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium, when defenses are still respecting balanced run and pass looks from Trio formation. If the defense shows a heavy box with eight or more defenders crowding the line, hot route the tight end into a quick release or check to Inside Zone instead to avoid a stacked front. Pair this play with Jet HB Zone and HB Counter in the same drive to keep linebackers guessing on gap versus zone run fits, since all three use similar backfield action but hit different lanes. Against aggressive user defenders flowing hard to the jet motion, stick with the off tackle design since the misdirection is built to punish overpursuit.
