Slants out of Shotgun Trio 11 personnel shows a three-receiver bunch to one side with the backside receiver (red route) breaking hard inside on a quick slant, while the two receivers on the strong side run a slant and an inside release into a corner/out breaking route to the sideline, and the third receiver runs a shallow out. This is a classic man beater built on quick, angular breaks that create instant separation against tight coverage, and it also holds up against zone since the slants settle into soft spots behind linebackers. The primary read progression starts with the backside slant (red) as the hot, quick-hitting throw, then works to the strong side slant, and finishes with the flat/out route as the checkdown or zone beater option.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment: if corners are pressed at the line with a single deep safety, expect the slants to win quickly against man coverage. Watch the Mike linebacker's depth at the snap, since a shallow drop or blitz signals a hole in the underneath slant zone that the quarterback will attack immediately. Man coverage with inside leverage from the corners is the biggest threat to this play, so a defense playing outside leverage or bail technique can undercut the slant angle. Zone defenses with a linebacker sitting in the throwing lane (Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 with a robber) can jump the backside slant route, so track that hook zone defender before the throw. Post-snap, user a linebacker or nickel defender to sit in the shallow crossing lanes and disguise the blitz timing, since slants are vulnerable to a well-timed nano blitz or A-gap pressure that beats the quick game before the ball comes out.
Fire this play out of Trio when you diagnose Cover 1 or Cover 3 press coverage, since the slants create instant separation off the line against man defenders. Use it on third and short to medium distance because the quick timing routes get the ball out before the pass rush closes. Hot route the backside slant into a fade if you see a corner sitting hard on that inside break, and check the flat route to a flat spot or shallow drag if a linebacker is squatting on the slant window. Pair this with Verticals or Mills Y Corner from the same set to keep the defense honest on deep shots after they start jumping the quick slants. Sequence it after HB Draw or Inside Zone from Trio to bait linebackers into run fits before hitting the slant window over the middle.
