Empty Base Trio empties the backfield out of Shotgun 11 personnel, putting the RB out wide as part of a three receiver bunch-adjacent trio to one side with the X isolated on the opposite hash and the TE working from the slot. Unlike standard Shotgun sets that keep a back in for pass protection or play action, Empty Base Trio commits five eligible receivers to the route distribution, which forces the defense to declare its coverage rotation before the snap. If the defense stays in a two high shell, you are seeing five defenders account for five routes with no help underneath. If they roll to single high, one of your trio receivers is getting matched by a linebacker or a third safety.
The alignment itself is the read. Trio to the strong side creates natural stack and switch releases, so man coverage teams have to communicate through traffic, while zone teams get flooded on the same horizontal level. Plays like Drive Switch Seams and Slot Fade Cross attack that trio side vertically with crossing release angles, and Hoss Juke gives you the classic seam plus hitch answer against Cover 2 and Cover 3 alike. Meanwhile the isolated X on the backside is your one on one indicator: any single high look with no cloud corner means Deep Attack, Stick Nod, or a simple hot route fade to that side is live.
Because the RB is displaced as a receiver, the Power HB and 3DRB tags matter more than usual here. A high catching, high route running back split wide is a mismatch against a linebacker in man coverage, and Shock Slot Option plus Verticals H Option let you sit that player down in space. The Gadget tag opens the door for QB Draw and X Mid Screen as constraint plays, which keeps aggressive users from freely blitzing five with no back to pick anyone up.
Read the defensive rotation first: two high with soft corners means All Hitch or Curl Combo for easy yards, single high with a corner over the isolated X means go to Deep Attack or Stick Nod.
On third and medium, run Hitches Slot In or Double Slant Stick and let your slot work the seam window, but hot route the RB out wide to a curl if you see a linebacker walk out over him.
Use Shock Slot Option and Verticals H Option against man coverage where option routes automatically break away from the defender, especially with a high route running slot or back split out.
Keep QB Draw and X Mid Screen in the rotation once your opponent starts blitzing five or more, since both plays hit the exact space vacated by the pressure and reset your play calling leverage.
If you see a single high safety cheating toward the trio, motion a trio receiver across to create a temporary numbers advantage and confirm man coverage by watching whether a defender follows.
