Divide Double In deploys five eligible receivers out of the Empty Base Trio set with no running back in the backfield. The outside receiver to the left runs a deep vertical to stretch the safety, the inside slot receiver on that side runs a corner route toward the numbers, and the trio to the right creates a layered read: the tight end runs a deep in from the slot, the slot receiver runs a shallow crossing in underneath, and the outside receiver runs a quick out and up toward the sideline. This is a man beater built to attack single high or man coverage by flooding the middle with two in-breaking routes stacked at different depths while the vertical and corner routes occupy the deep defenders, and the primary read progression starts with the shallow crossing in, works up to the deep in from the tight end, and finishes with the deep vertical on the backside if the underneath defenders jump the crossers.
Look for two deep safeties pre-snap since Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells can bracket the deep in and corner routes, forcing you to rely on the crossing in underneath instead. Watch linebacker depth at the snap because a linebacker sitting in the middle hook zone can undercut the shallow crossing in route and jump the throw. Identify man coverage by checking if defenders align tight to receivers pre-snap, since this play is designed to exploit man match ups with the crossing and in breaking routes. If the defense shows a blitz look with extra rushers off the edge, get the ball out quickly to the shallow crosser since the empty backfield leaves no blocker to pick up pressure. A user controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone can take away the crossing in read, so be ready to progress to the deep in from the tight end or the backside vertical.
Check pre-snap for single high safety looks since the deep vertical on the backside will isolate that safety and open throwing lanes underneath for the double in concept.
Use the shallow crossing in as your first read against man coverage because it creates natural separation off the crossing action, especially versus press corners who lose leverage.
Hot route the flat runner (out and up route) into a quick hitch against off man or Cover 3 if you need a faster release valve on early downs.
Pair this play with Bubble Screen or Slants earlier in a series to condition the defense to expect quick, short throws, then hit them with the deep in from the tight end for a chunk gain.
Best used on second and medium to third and long situations where the double in combo can settle into the void between linebackers and safeties for a first down conversion.
