Breakdown

Slot Fade Cross is a five wide route concept out of Shotgun Empty Base Trio that stresses the field with a deep fade, a long developing crosser, a corner route, and a flat/pivot combo on the boundary. The outside receiver on the left runs a fade up the sideline while the inside slot receiver on that side works a quick hitch and then releases upfield as a check option. On the right side the tight end or slot runs a deep crosser across the middle of the field while the outside receiver breaks off into a corner route, and the far right receiver runs a shallow out to the flat. This is a man beater built to create natural picks and separation against man coverage, with the primary read progressing from the crosser working across the field to the fade on the backside, then working down to the flat route if the defense sits deep.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with no safety help over the crosser is the biggest indicator this play is live, especially if the linebacker assigned to the crosser is slower in coverage. Watch for a single high safety cheating toward the fade side pre-snap, this signals the quarterback should look opposite to the crosser and flat instead of forcing the fade. Cover 3 zone drops can undercut the crosser if a linebacker sits in the middle hook zone, so track the depth of that defender before committing to the crosser as your first read. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge will speed up the timing on the fade and corner routes, so recognize pressure and get ready to work the quicker flat route as a checkdown. User controlled defenders lurking in the shallow crossing lanes can jump the crosser late, so look off that route with your eyes before committing to the throw.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second or third and medium to long when you need to attack man coverage with the crosser as your first read.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties rotate your eyes to the crosser and flat combo since the fade will likely be capped.

Against single high looks with the corner playing tight to the fade side, throw the fade early before the safety can rotate over the top.

Pair this play with Wheel Cross or Drag Slot Fade in your sequencing so the defense has to respect both the deep crosser and the underneath crossing action from different angles.

Hot route the flat runner into a deeper out or comeback if you are facing a squatting cornerback who jumps short routes in zone.
