Slot Shake is a five-wide empty pass concept out of Empty Base Trio in Shotgun, built to attack man and zone coverage with a mix of vertical shots and quick-hitting breaks. The three-receiver side runs a go route on the outside, a slant flat underneath it, and a shake route (out and up) from the slot to create natural rub separation, while the backside two-receiver stack runs a hitch and comeback combo for a built-in outlet against soft coverage. With the QB in shotgun and no run support in the backfield, this is a pure quick pass concept: the primary read starts with the shake route working against man leverage, then progresses to the slant flat for a hot throw if the defense sits back in zone.
Defensive Reads
Watch the slot corner or nickel defender pre-snap: if he is playing tight man technique, expect the shake route to win once the receiver breaks outside then up. Key the deep safety rotation right after the snap; if he stays flat-footed in the middle, the backside go route or shake vertical release can beat a single-high shell. Look for a linebacker sinking into the shallow flat area, since that defender is responsible for taking away the slant flat conversion route. If you see a Cover 2 shell with corners sitting on the outside hitches, the shake route working underneath the corner's zone drop becomes the easiest completion. Beware disguised blitzes off the edge since the empty formation removes backfield protection help, so a fast presnap motion or hot route to the flat can neutralize pressure before it disrupts the timing.
Usage Tips
Check pre-snap for single-high versus two-high safety alignment before deciding which side of the field to attack first.
Against man coverage, prioritize the shake route out of the slot since the out-and-up move is designed to snap defenders off their hips.
If the cornerback on the backside is playing off, take the comeback route for a quick, controlled gain rather than forcing the deep go.
Use this on second or third and short to medium since the quick game options (slant flat, hitch) give you a safe checkdown if the shake and comeback are covered.
Pair this with Slants or Double Slant Stick earlier in a series so the defense starts jumping short routes, then hit the shake or go route vertical shot for a big play once they bite.
