Breakdown
Drag Slot Fade is an empty formation pass play out of Shotgun Empty Base Trio that stresses the field horizontally on the left while attacking vertically on the right. To the left, the two receivers run a stacked combo: the outside route breaks flat while the inside receiver crosses underneath into a shallow drag, giving the quarterback an easy check-down against zone drops. On the right side, the outside receiver runs a fade up the sideline while the slot receiver runs a drag underneath that crosses the field, and the red route from the inline receiver breaks flat before working vertically as a scheme adjustment or user-controlled conversion route. This is a man beater at its core, using the drag concepts to pick off man defenders and create separation, while the fade gives a one-on-one shot play outside if the corner bites on the drag. Primary read progression starts with the fade on the backside for the big play, then works down to the drags and flat routes as safety valves against pressure or tight man coverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and leverage on the fade side receiver since a rolled up safety or press corner with no deep help signals man coverage and an open fade window Watch linebacker depth at the snap since shallow drops indicate zone coverage that will sit on the drag routes and take away the underneath crossers User the deep half or deep third defender to eliminate the fade throw, forcing the quarterback to dump the ball off to the drags where you can rally and limit yards after catch Spy or blitz the inline receiver's flat and vertical release since that route can convert into a big gainer if left uncovered against zone drops Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties shut down the fade completely, forcing the offense into a horizontal, low-value passing attack that your underneath defenders can swarm
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing single high or two high safeties since the fade route only has value against single high or man coverage without deep help
If you see Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with two deep defenders over the fade side, bail out of the progression early and rely on the drags underneath
Use hot routes to slide the backside outside receiver into a deeper comeback if you are facing heavy press man to counter aggressive corners
This play works best on 2nd and medium or 3rd and short since the drag routes provide a reliable underneath answer if the fade is covered
Pair this play with Slants or Hitches Slot In earlier in a drive to set up defenders biting on quick game, then hit the fade for a explosive play once corners start jumping short routes
Against blitz-heavy opponents, get rid of the ball quickly to the drag since the empty backfield leaves no extra pass protection
