Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing, two deep safeties usually signal Cover 2 or Cover 4 which opens throwing lanes underneath for the slant and juke routes. Watch the slot cornerback's positioning at the snap, if he sits in soft zone rather than pressing, the slant will sit down in the void for an easy completion. Post-snap, track any user controlled defender dropping into the middle lurk area, since that defender can jump the slant or the underneath juke route if he reads it early. Zone defenses with linebackers sinking deep into the middle of the field can take away the seam read, so be ready to reset to the boundary go routes if the middle clogs up. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness for this concept, since the vertical routes will win outside if defenders lack deep help.

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap look at the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep the slant and underneath juke route will have room to work against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells.

Against man coverage, key on the slant receiver first since it creates instant separation off the line versus press or off man defenders.

If the defense shows single high safety look, drift your eyes to the seam and go routes on the right side since Cover 3 defenders struggle to cover the deep thirds against this many vertical stems.

Use this play on early downs or third and short to medium since the quick slant read gives you a safety valve if the deep routes are covered.
