Breakdown

Hitches Slot In is an empty formation five man route concept built to attack zone coverage with quick, high percentage throws. To the left, two receivers run hitch routes stacked at different depths, giving the quarterback an immediate horizontal stretch read against off corners or soft zone drops. On the right side, the slot receiver runs a short in route while the outside receiver runs a deep comeback (the red route) that clears out space and holds the deep defender, with the tightest receiver running a quick out breaking underneath. The primary read progression starts with the two hitches on the left, working to the underneath in route and comeback combo on the right if the defense rolls coverage away from the boundary.

Defensive Reads

Look for cornerback depth pre-snap, hitches beat off man and zone coverage but get shut down quickly by press man with a jam at the line. Watch the flow of linebackers after the snap, if they sink into the underneath zones on the right side the in route will be contested and the comeback becomes the better window. Identify single high safety looks, since the play lacks a deep vertical threat on the left side, a single high safety can afford to cheat toward the trips or into the box against the run. Beware of user controlled defenders sitting in the shallow hook zone, they can undercut the in route or jump the hitch if the quarterback stares down one side. This concept struggles against aggressive zone blitz packages that bring extra rushers while dropping a corner into a shallow zone, since the quick game has nowhere to go if the first read is covered.

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and short to medium since the hitch routes settle in at the sticks and give the quarterback a rhythm throw with a fast release.

Identify zone shells pre-snap by checking corner depth, if the corners are backed off at 7 or more yards this play is designed to exploit the soft cushion with the hitch and in combo.

Hot route the backside hitch into a fade or seam against man coverage if you see a corner pressed up in the slot with no safety help over the top.

Pair this play with All Curl or Shock Levels from the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick hitch throws and deeper levels concepts out of the same empty look.

Against blitz heavy defenses, get the ball out fast to the nearest hitch since there is no running back to check down to and the empty backfield invites pressure.
