Breakdown

Verticals H Option lines up out of Empty Base Trio in Shotgun with 11 personnel, spreading five receivers wide and leaving the QB with no protection help beyond the offensive line. Four receivers stem into vertical stretches up the numbers and the seam, while the inside slot runs an option route that breaks outside and up field, sitting down or continuing vertical based on the underneath defender's leverage. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to overload deep zones with four verticals while the option route gives the QB a built-in answer versus underneath sink or robber coverage. The primary read starts with the option route working outside to inside, then progresses to the outermost vertical if the safety shell shows two-high, and finally to the backside vertical if the middle of the field opens up.

Defensive Reads

Identify two-high safety alignment pre-snap since both safeties will be forced to pick a vertical threat, opening a throwing window on whichever seam they abandon. Watch for a single high safety rotating late, this signals Cover 3 and means the QB should key the flow of the deep middle defender to decide between the seam vertical and the option route. User the underneath linebacker or nickel defender who has eyes on the option route, since jumping his zone drop early can bait the QB into a pick if he commits to the option throw. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is exposed on the outside verticals, so press corners without deep help get beat easily on a clean release. A disguised zone blitz that drops a defensive lineman into the shallow zone can take away the option route, forcing the QB to hold the ball longer against a four man rush with no check down.

Usage Tips

Check the safety shell before the snap, two-high shells are what this concept is designed to punish since four verticals will stretch each safety past the numbers.

Use the option route as your first hot read against zone blitzes or when you see a linebacker sitting in the shallow throwing lane, since he can settle in the void immediately.

Against man coverage, work the outside verticals first since Empty Base Trio isolates the boundary corner without safety help over the top.

Pair this play with Drive Switch Seams or Curl Combo in the same set to keep defenses guessing between four verts and quick underneath breaks, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.

Best called on 2nd or 3rd and medium to long when you need a big chunk play, and avoid it on 3rd and short where the option route's sit tendency does not guarantee enough separation underneath.
