Wide Y Off Trips takes the standard Shotgun trips look and stretches it, pushing the outside receiver to the numbers while the tight end aligns off the line inside the bunch. That off alignment matters: the Y is free from press coverage and gets a clean release into the intermediate middle, which is why so many of the play art concepts in this set (PA Y Cross, Reload PA Slot Cross, Reload Shallow Cross) attack the hook and curl zones with a receiver who is already two yards into his stem before the defense reacts. On the backside you get a true isolated X, and with the trips side occupying three defenders, you are almost always looking at a single high safety or a bail corner on that island.
Read the box count pre snap. Five or fewer in the box and a bail corner means take the RPO Power Alert Bubble or HB Power G behind the pulling guard. Six or more and you should be working the alert read on RPO Walk Alert Slant or RPO Walk Glance.
Against single high man, PA Y Cross is your go to. The off tight end wins his release inside and the crossing pattern outruns most man defenders in the second level.
On third and seven to ten, run Reload PA Slot Cross and hot route the backside X to a curl or comeback. You get the crosser as your primary and the iso as a safety valve away from the user.
Use the choice routes on PA Walk Slot Choice against two high shells. The option break sits down against soft zone and breaks out against man, so it functions as a coverage neutral read.
If your opponent is blitzing your interior consistently, audible to RPO Walk Alert Curls and take the quick alert throw. It gets the ball out before the pressure lands and treats the blitz as free yardage.
