Reload Shallow Cross is a man beater built around a shallow crosser working underneath from the trips side, paired with a reload concept that brings a second receiver back across the field behind it to create natural traffic against man coverage. The Y (tight end) works a corner or seam breaking route to hold safeties and linebackers while the deep routes stretch the defense vertically, opening up the underneath crossers on rub concepts. Primary read progression starts with the shallow crosser working left to right, then reloads to the second crossing route if the first is taken away, before checking down to the flat or leaking backfield outlet.
Look for two high safety shells presnap since single high man coverage with no help over the top is where the reload crossers create the most separation Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink too deep in zone drops the shallow crosser will settle into the void underneath for an easy completion Identify user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone or spying the crosser, a smart human defender can jump the first crossing route and force you to reload to the second option Key on press man corners at the line, if the corner presses without safety help the rub concept from the reload routes will break him off his assignment Beware of disguised zone blitzes where linebackers show blitz then bail into shallow zones, this can bait a quick throw into a jumped route and result in a turnover
Use this play on second and medium to third and medium when you expect man coverage since the reload crossers create natural rub picks that shake defenders on man to man assignments
Check the pre-snap alignment of the trips side corners, if you see tight press man alignment with no safety help over the top, the shallow cross concept will win quickly against trail technique
Motion the trips receiver before the snap to confirm man versus zone, if the defender follows across the formation you know you have a man beater matchup to exploit with the crossers
Combine this play with RPO Walk Alert Curls or RPO Walk Alert Slant earlier in a drive to condition the defense to expect quick game, then hit the deeper reload crosser once linebackers start jumping underneath routes
Against zone heavy defenses, hot route the shallow crosser into a deeper sit route or settle it in a soft spot behind linebackers since the natural rub design loses some value versus zone drops
Use play action variants like PA Y Cross or PA Walk Deep Choice from the same set to keep the defense honest before returning to this quicker hitting shallow cross concept
