Reload PA Slot Cross is a play-action concept out of Shotgun Wide Y Off Trips that uses run-fake mechanics to freeze linebackers before working a crossing route from the trips side. The "reload" action gives the quarterback a subtle ball fake and hitch step, buying extra time for the deep cross to develop while the backside typically holds a vertical or comeback option to keep single-high safeties honest. This is a man beater at its core, since the crossing route creates natural rub traffic against man defenders, but it also punishes zone defenses that sit their linebackers too shallow in coverage. The primary read progression starts with the slot cross working across the field, then moves to any underneath check-down or backside option if the cross gets picked up by a trailing defender or a zone drop clogs the throwing lane.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, since a single-high shell tells you the deep middle is occupied and the crossing route will need to work underneath that safety rather than behind him. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, because linebackers who bite hard on the run fake open up the throwing window for the cross before they can recover and get their eyes back downfield. Identify any user-controlled defender flowing toward the line of scrimmage on the play-action fake, since that usually signals a spy or blitz look that leaves the cross open against zone coverage. Cover 3 with aggressive underneath zone drops or a strong lurk defender sitting in the crosser's lane can shut this play down, so be ready to reset to the checkdown or backside option immediately. Man coverage with no help over the top, especially Cover 0 or Cover 1 without a robber, is where this play wins most consistently because the cross creates natural leverage against trailing defenders.
Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners lined up tight on the trips receivers, since the slot cross will pick up natural separation against man defenders trailing through traffic.
Use the play-action fake to bait linebackers into stepping up on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage, when defenses expect run out of this personnel grouping.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see a blitz look pre-snap, giving the quarterback a faster answer than waiting on the developing cross.
