Bunch Spread lives up to its name by splitting the difference between a true bunch cluster and a four-wide spread look. You get 11 personnel with the tight end and slot receiver stacked tight to one side while the boundary receiver stays isolated wide, and the running back sits next to the quarterback in the gun. That alignment forces the defense to make a decision before the snap: bracket the bunch side and leave your best outside receiver on an island, or play balanced and let the compressed side create natural traffic on man coverage.
The condensed spacing is what separates this set from standard Gun Spread or Trips looks in the Shotgun formation. Bunch releases create free access off the line because defenders in man have to navigate each other, and the Mtn family of concepts (Mtn Slot Hitch, Mtn Snag Under, Mtn Y-Shake, Mtn Curl Flat Corner, Mtn Slot Out, Mtn Slot Under) all attack the intermediate window between the hook defender and the curl/flat player. Meanwhile Spacing and Z Spot give you full-field triangle reads against zone, and Levels Dig, Speed Dig, Dig Return, Branch Return, and Dagger X-Go punish anything that plays soft over the top.
Run game is real here too. Inside Zone and Outside Zone with the tight end attached to the bunch side give you a legitimate lead surface, and the 3DRB and Power HB tags mean you can rotate a receiving back or a bruiser depending on personnel. HB Slip Screen and Cheat HB Slip Screen are your blitz answers, and Jet Pull Shallow plus the Gadget tag gives you motion looks that force the defense to declare man or zone before you snap it.
The matchup advantage is simple: motion the bunch side receiver across and read defender leverage. If a defender chases, you have man and every crossing concept in the set is live. If the defense shifts and passes off, you are looking at zone and your snag, spot, and spacing reads take over.
Motion the bunch receiver pre-snap and read whether a defender travels. Man coverage means go to Cheat Slot Cross or Mtn Slot Under. If defenders stay put, work Spacing or Mtn Snag Under against the zone.
On third and medium, Mtn Snag Under and Z Spot are your money concepts. Snap it with the flat as your safety valve and the corner route as your shot if the corner squats.
Against single high, hot route the isolated boundary receiver to a fade or streak and read the safety rotation. If he leans to the bunch side you have a one-on-one deep.
Set your protection by blocking the running back and hot routing the tight end to a quick out when you see six in the box with a shifted safety, then check into Inside Zone if they bail.
Use HB Slip Screen and Cheat HB Slip Screen sparingly and only when the opponent has shown pressure, since the compressed bunch alignment gives your linemen a clean release into open field.
