Breakdown

Drive Y Corner aligns out of Shotgun Bunch Spread with 11 personnel, stacking three receivers tight to one side while an isolated receiver runs a vertical release on the backside. From the bunch, the Y runs a corner route breaking outside toward the sideline, one receiver runs a drive/shallow crosser underneath, and the third bunch receiver clears out on a deep drive route across the field. The backside outside receiver runs a straight vertical to hold the safety, and the RB stays in to help protect. This is a Cover 4 beater designed to attack the seam and flat with the corner route as the primary read, working underneath crossers as the checkdown progression.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, look at safety depth and alignment, if both safeties are backed off at 10-12 yards that is a Cover 4 or Cover 2 shell this play is designed to attack. Post-snap, key the flat defender and outside cornerback, if they sink with the corner route and abandon the shallow crosser, take the underneath drive route for a quick easy completion. Watch for a user lurk linebacker sitting in the middle of the field, this can jump the drive route crossing pattern and bait a turnover if the quarterback stares it down too long. Against man coverage or a nano blitz, the corner route timing breaks down since it relies on zone defenders leaving grass, expect pressure to disrupt the deeper read. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a hard flat defender jumping the underneath crosser, work the corner route into the void behind him for the explosive gain.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense shows two deep safeties or a single high shell, since Cover 4 and quarters looks are exactly what this concept is built to exploit.

Key the corner route first, it is the primary read and creates natural separation against Cover 4 defenders who have to respect the flat and vertical threats simultaneously.

If you see man coverage instead, hot route the shallow drive route to a quick out or speed out to beat man beaters more efficiently, since the corner route timing is built for zone defenders.

Use this play on early downs or in Cover 4 shells specifically, then sequence it with Mtn Curl Flat Corner or Corner Divide from the same set so the defense cannot sit on the corner route concept.

Watch for user-controlled safeties sitting on the corner route, if you see a defender crash that landmark pre-snap, check down to the drive route underneath immediately.
