Outside Zone out of Shotgun Bunch Spread is a zone run play that sends the offensive line laterally to seal edges and create a stretch bounce for the HB. The diagram shows a bunch alignment to the right with a single receiver split wide left running a vertical route to occupy the deep defender, while the HB starts in the backfield and flows outside toward the play call arrow. The primary read progression for the HB is to press the point of attack, read the flow of the zone blockers from the playside tackle out to the edge, and decide whether to bounce it outside, bend it up the alley, or cut it back against overpursuing defenders.
Defensive Reads
Watch for stacked safeties near the box pre-snap, which signals a run blitz or an extra defender in the fit that can beat outside zone before it develops. Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage, if they stay wide and refuse to get reached, force a cutback read for the HB. User-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side bunch can be exploited by cutting the run back through the vacated backside gap. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with aggressive flow linebackers are vulnerable to this play since their run fits often overcommit to the strength call. Defenses that show a 4-3 under front with the strong safety cheating into the box tend to shut down the bounce, so identify that alignment pre-snap and consider an audible.
Usage Tips
Attack light boxes with only six or fewer defenders in the run fit since the zone scheme wins on numbers advantage rather than power at the point of attack.
Use pre-snap motion or check the alignment of the bunch to bait linebackers into flowing hard one direction, then run this away from their leverage.
If you diagnose a run blitz or a defender crashing the edge pre-snap, be ready to cut this back immediately rather than forcing the bounce outside.
