Mtn Slot Hitch aligns out of Shotgun Bunch Spread with a motion man crossing the backfield before the snap to the boundary, sitting down as a shallow hitch read on the left. On the bunch side, one receiver runs a deep vertical clear-out, another works an out and up double move, and the third breaks off a quick out at the sticks after stemming inside. This is a man beater built on the motion creating a natural pick and rub at the line while the bunch routes stress leverage with in and out combos, and the deep vertical occupies the safety over the top. The primary read starts with the motion hitch as a built-in answer versus man leverage, then progresses to the underneath out route before working back to the vertical shot if the safety bites.
Watch the motion defender pre-snap, if he mirrors across the formation it confirms man coverage and the hitch route becomes an almost automatic completion versus a trailing corner. Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety cheating toward the bunch side signals potential trouble on the deep vertical route and may require an early checkdown. Post-snap, key any user-controlled linebacker or safety dropping into the underneath passing lanes since a lurking defender sitting on the out route can bait a turnover if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can undercut the out route, so be ready to climb the progression to the vertical shot if that defender jumps the throwing lane. Zone blitz looks with a linebacker dropping into the vacated hitch area will disrupt this play's first read, forcing an immediate check to the bunch side combo routes.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the ball is even snapped, if the defender follows across the formation you have a clean man beater on your hands. Against zone shells, hold the ball a beat longer and let the underneath out route settle into the void created by the vertical clear-out. This play pairs well with Mtn Slot Out and Mtn Curl Flat Corner in the same set since the initial motion and route stems look identical, forcing defenders to guess and opening up bigger plays off similar formations. Best called on third and short to third and medium where the quick hitch and out routes give you a high floor conversion option. If the defense starts jumping the hitch route after seeing it once, sequence into Mtn Y-Shake or Dagger X-Go from the same personnel to punish overaggressive underneath defenders.
