Inside Zone out of Shotgun Bunch Spread is a pure zone run play with the RB aligned offset in the backfield and a bunch alignment (TE and two WRs stacked tight) to one side. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, stepping in unison to the play side to create combo blocks and seal running lanes, while the bunch look pulls defenders out of the box or creates natural rub potential if the defense tries to walk down extra defenders. This is a downhill run play designed to beat light boxes and out-leverage overpursuing zone or man defenses, with the primary read being the playside A gap first, bouncing to the B or C gap based on how the linebackers and edge defenders flow.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth. Stacked boxes with linebackers creeping to the line signal an inside blitz look designed to beat zone runs. Watch strong safety alignment relative to the bunch formation. If the safety rotates down into the box before the snap, expect an extra run fit and a quicker flow to the play side. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and linebacker flow. If they crash hard down the line, the cutback lane backside should open up. Look for defensive tackles executing a "gap exchange" or slant technique, this is designed to blow up inside zone by shooting the gap the running back is aiming for. This play struggles against disciplined 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers reading their gaps and staying square, and it can get stuffed by aggressive nano blitzes if you do not identify and manually block the extra rusher.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap. If the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to a play-action shot from this same bunch look instead of forcing the run.
Use the bunch alignment to bait linebackers into crashing toward the trips side, then let your RB read the backside cutback lane if the defense overpursues.
Pair this run with Mtn Slot Out or Mtn Slot Hitch from the same formation so the defense has to respect both the run action and the quick bunch route concepts out of identical personnel.
On early downs (first and ten, second and short), this is your bread and butter play to stay ahead of the chains and set up play-action shots like PA Post later in the series.
Manually control the play side guard or center after the snap to seal off a looping linebacker or blitzing defender, especially against nano blitz packages that try to overload one gap.
