Split Cowboy is a Shotgun 11 personnel set that splits the backfield: the halfback aligns offset next to the quarterback while the tight end works as a flexed or wing piece, giving you a two-back look feel without leaving 1 RB 1 TE personnel. That alignment is the whole point. Defenses read the split backfield and often check into base or nickel run fits, which opens up the pass concepts stacked in this set. Unlike Shotgun sets that stack or bunch to one side, Split Cowboy spreads the strength horizontally and keeps a receiver isolated backside, so you always have a one on one to attack when the safety rotates away.
Motion the halfback out of the backfield pre snap to diagnose man or zone, then run Mesh against man and 689 Hook against zone.
On third and medium, run Slot Cross or Falcons X Dig and hot route the backside X to a slant if the defense shows single high press.
Use HB Draw and Read Option on second and long against nickel and dime to reset the down and distance, especially when the defense is showing two deep.
Block the halfback and the tight end on PA Bronco Fork when you see a linebacker creeping into the A gap, then let the backside dig develop.
Save HB Slip Screen for a drive where the defense has shown heavy edge pressure twice, and always check your slot receiver blocking angle before the snap.
