Slot Cross out of Shotgun Split Cowboy 11 personnel is a crosser-based man beater that puts two receivers working horizontally across the field at different depths to create natural rub traffic against man coverage. The slot receiver runs the primary crosser underneath while the outside receiver works a deeper in-breaking route, giving the quarterback a high-low read on the same side of the field. Pass protection is a standard five man slide, so the primary read progression starts with the underneath crosser against man leverage, then climbs to the deeper crosser if a linebacker or safety clogs the shallow window.
Pre-snap, identify single high safety looks like Cover 1 or Cover 3, since the crossing routes exploit the seams between man defenders and zone drop lanes in these shells. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink into short zone drops instead of matching receivers man to man you are likely facing Cover 3 or Cover 4, which allows the shallow crosser to settle into open grass before the defense rotates. Key the nickel or slot cornerback's initial step, if he opens his hips and runs with the slot receiver across the field you are in man coverage and should trust the rub to create separation. Beware Cover 2 with sticky underneath linebackers, since a hard-sinking Mike or Sam linebacker can undercut the shallow crosser and turn it into a pick six if the quarterback forces the throw. Look for user-controlled defenders lurking in the shallow crossing lane, disciplined defenders sitting in that window are the biggest threat to this concept, so be ready to move to your checkdown or the deeper crosser if that lurk defender does not bite on play fakes.
Use this play on second and medium to third and short when you expect man coverage or a single high shell, since the crossing action creates natural separation against man defenders trying to fight through traffic. Pre-snap, check for a MLB or nickel showing blitz depth, if you see a nano blitz look, hot route your running back to a quick flare or check release to buy the quarterback time. Motion the slot receiver before the snap to diagnose man versus zone, if the defender follows across the formation you have a green light to throw the crosser on time. Pair this call with Shallow Cross or Bronco Cross in the same set to keep defenders guessing on crossing depth and timing, then mix in Mesh from this set once you have shown Slot Cross a few times to attack the same underneath area with a different rub concept. Against aggressive user linebackers who jump the shallow crosser, progress immediately to the deeper in-breaking route since the shallow route is designed as a decoy to clear space underneath.
