Bronco Cross out of Shotgun Split Cowboy is a crosser-based man beater built around a deep crossing route working from one side of the field to the other, paired with an underneath crossing route and a flat or angle route to hold linebackers. The crossing routes create natural rub and separation against man coverage while the intermediate crosser sits down against zone drops for a quick access throw. Primary read progression starts with the deep cross as it clears the middle of the field, works down to the underneath crosser on man coverage or the sitting shallow crosser against zone, then checks down to the flat or angle route as a last resort against pressure.
Watch for user-controlled linebackers dropping into the deep middle hole, since a rangy Mike linebacker or deep zone defender can undercut the crossing route timing. Check safety depth before the snap, two high safeties who stay deep can bracket the deep cross and force you to the underneath option immediately. Diagnose man coverage by watching corner alignment, if corners are pressed and turned to run with receivers the crossing routes should win clean separation. Look for blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge, since this forces a quicker progression to the underneath crosser or flat route before the pocket collapses. Zone shells with linebackers sinking hard to the middle of the field or a robber defender lurking underneath the crossers will jump the throwing lanes, so recognize this post-snap and hold the ball to let routes develop into openings behind the lurk.
Identify pre-snap whether the defense is showing single high or two high safety look, since the deep crosser needs room to work through the middle of the field against single high shells.
Against man coverage, trust the crossing routes to create natural separation off the rub and take the shot down the deep cross before checking down.
Hot route the underneath crosser into a shallow drag or sit route if you diagnose a zone blitz look, this gives you a faster outlet against pressure.
Use this play on second and medium to second and long situations where the defense is more likely to sit in zone coverage, allowing the crossers to find soft spots between levels.
Pair Bronco Cross with Bronco Y-angle or Shallow Cross in the same set to keep the defense guessing between deep crossing concepts and quick angle breaks off similar formations.
Motion the slot receiver pre-snap to help identify man versus zone before the snap, then confirm your read once the ball is out.
