PA F Slide is a play-action pass out of the Shotgun Split Cowboy set that sells the run fake before releasing the fullback or attached TE on a slide route underneath while the rest of the route concept works vertically to hold the safeties. The play-action mesh forces linebackers to bite on the run fake, opening up the slide route as a natural zone beater against Cover 3 and Cover 2 sink coverage. Your primary read progression starts with the F slide route as the immediate hot option versus blitz or man coverage, then works to the intermediate crossers before checking down to the backside flat if the underneath window is jumped.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the play fake, the F slide route will have a wide open throwing lane in the intermediate middle. Check safety alignment pre-snap, a single high safety look often means Cover 3 or Cover 1, both of which are vulnerable to the slide route sitting in the seam behind the linebackers. Beware user-controlled defenders spying the slide route or dropping into a lurk technique in Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells, since a heads up defender can jump this route if the QB stares it down too long. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can be exploited if the play action holds the edge defenders just long enough for a quick throw, but interior blitzes up the A or B gap can collapse the pocket before the slide route develops. This play is shut down by disciplined zone defenses that keep linebackers on their landmarks, ignoring the run fake and sitting on short crossing routes.
Use pre-snap motion or a shift to identify if the defense is playing man or zone before the snap, since the slide route creates natural rub opportunities against man coverage but sits in soft spots against zone. Call this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and medium) when defenses expect run based on personnel and formation tendencies, since the play action freeze is most effective when the defense is respecting HB Power O or HB Draw from the same set. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or speed out if you see aggressive corner blitzes, giving you a fast answer against pressure looks. Pair this play in sequence with HB Power O and Read Option to build run tendency, then hit PA F Slide once linebackers start creeping up to stop the run. If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap, expect the slide route to be your best answer since it attacks the vacated middle linebacker zone.
