Breakdown

HB Cross Buck out of Shotgun Split Cowboy is a crosser-based man beater built around a shallow crossing route that stretches the field horizontally underneath while other receivers occupy vertical zones to hold off safeties. The HB stays in to check block or leak out late as a release valve, giving you a built-in answer against blitz heavy looks. Your primary read starts with the crosser working across the formation, and if that route is choked out by a trailing defender or a robber, you progress to the deeper route breaking on the opposite side for a man to man throw against overplayed leverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a linebacker or nickel defender sitting in the middle of the field, since a user controlled lurk defender can jump the crosser and bait a turnover. Cover 3 zone with a hard flat defender can undercut the crosser early, so be ready to progress to your secondary route if that flat defender sits. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal shell for this play, since the crosser can create natural separation against trailing defenders. Pre-snap, check cornerback depth and safety rotation, since a two high shell with press corners often signals a Cover 2 look that squeezes the crosser's window. Post-snap, track blitz timing closely, since a delayed A gap blitz can collapse the pocket right as the crosser is developing and force an early or errant throw.

Usage Tips

Check the middle of the field pre-snap to identify single high versus two high safety shells before committing to the crosser as your first read.

Against man coverage, motion the HB or use a hot route to adjust the crosser's depth so it clears linebackers before working across the field.

Use HB Cross Buck on second and medium or third and short distances where the crosser can pick up quick yardage against zone drops or a blown man assignment.

Pair this play with HB Draw or Read Option out of the same set so defenses have to respect the run fake before committing extra bodies to pass coverage.

If the defense shows heavy blitz pre-snap, hot route the crosser to a quicker option or check it down to the HB out of the backfield for a safe outlet.
