HB Power O out of Shotgun Split Cowboy is a gap scheme run that pulls the backside guard (and often a fullback or TE in-line) to seal the point of attack while the play-side line drives down blocks on the front. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO look, designed to create a numbers advantage at the point of attack through the pulling lineman rather than zone-based double teams. Your primary read is the pulling guard's kick-out or wrap block: press the hole off the down blocks, then decide to bounce outside or stick it up in the crease based on how the puller finishes his block on the first defender he encounters.
Watch for stacked linebackers at depth of five yards or less pre-snap, since this signals a run blitz that can beat the pulling guard to the hole before he sets his block. Identify one-gap penetrating defensive tackles versus two-gap controlled fronts. Power O struggles against a hard-charging one-gap tackle who shoots the play-side gap and blows up the down block before the puller arrives. Key the play-side defensive end. If he crashes hard inside to string the play out, look to bounce the run outside the pulling guard's kick-out block. Man coverage on the backside with a blitzing linebacker off the edge can beat this play if the offensive tackle is left one-on-one and loses the rep, so check protection numbers before the snap. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with safeties sitting at depth usually keep light boxes, which favors the run, but watch for a safety cheating down into the box as a run support defender after the shift.

Attack light boxes pre-snap. If you count six or fewer defenders in the box with the safety showing two-high, this play has a numbers advantage and should hit for four or more yards.
Use manual motion with the HB pre-snap only if you need to check defensive alignment, since Power O relies on gap integrity and any shift can tip the defense.
Pair this with HB Cross Buck and Read Option in your called sequence. All three plays start with similar backfield action, forcing linebackers to freeze on run fits before you go to play-action shots like PA Bronco Fork or PA F Slide.
On second and short or third and short, call Power O with confidence against base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts, but avoid it against heavy overload blitz fronts where the puller has no time to get to the edge.
