Empty Bunch Wide takes the standard Shotgun empty look and pushes the three receiver bunch out toward the numbers rather than compressing it near the tackle box. That wide alignment forces the defense to declare early: either they travel with the bunch and leave the backside isolated, or they play balanced and give you a numbers advantage to the bunch side. The 11 personnel grouping puts your tight end in the bunch as the point man, which means you are usually getting a linebacker or big nickel body in space against a receiving tight end, and the tag list (3DRB, SLWR) tells you the back and slot receiver are your mismatch pieces rather than blockers.
Because there is no running back in the backfield, every pre-snap rotation the defense makes is visible and every blitzer is accounted for in your read. The five eligible receivers spread the field horizontally, which stretches zone coverage thin and gives you free access reads against single high. Play art here leans heavily on screens and misdirection: RPO Q Screen Draw, RPO Screen QB Draw, Jailbreak Screen, Mtn Orbit Swing Screen, and Mtn Orbit Fk Swing Screen all punish defenses that bail out or bring heat, while QB Draw gives you a legitimate run threat out of an empty shell when the box empties out.
The dropback concepts are where this set earns its money in competitive play. Z Spot N Go and Z Spot Smash attack the flat defender with high low reads off the bunch, Drive Y Corner and Drive Curl work the middle against man, Deep Flood and Post Corner Read stress cover 3 and cover 2 down the sideline, and Spacing Switch floods the underneath zones with releases that are nearly impossible to jam because of the bunch spacing. The isolated backside receiver is your one on one every single snap, which is where the SLWR tag matters: motion your best route runner across and let him win alone.
Read the box first. If the defense has six or more defenders inside against five blockers, get to a screen or an RPO look. If they empty the box to match your spread, QB Draw and RPO Screen QB Draw are free yards.
On third and medium, motion the point man of the bunch across the formation to identify man versus zone, then work Z Spot Smash to the bunch against zone or let the isolated backside receiver win one on one against man.
Against cover 2, Post Corner Read and Deep Flood attack the sideline hole behind the corner and in front of the safety. Against cover 3, Spacing Switch and Drag Curl put bodies in every underneath window.
Hot route a bunch receiver to block when you diagnose an overload blitz, or put your tight end on a quick slant and throw hot into the vacated zone before the pressure arrives.
Mix in Mtn Orbit Fk Swing Screen after you have shown the real swing screen a few times. The orbit motion pulls the user defender and opens the intermediate dig behind it.
