Post Corner Read is an empty bunch concept that sends the two inside bunch receivers vertical on a post and a corner route that cross deep down the field, while the outside receiver from the bunch runs a quick out and the two isolated receivers on the backside run a deep out and a short comeback underneath it. There is no run blocking shown since this is a five wide empty formation, so it is a pure pass concept designed to isolate coverage with the post corner cross to the field side. This is a man beater and cover 2 beater, with the primary read progression starting on the post corner combo to identify which defender the corner route pulls before working back to the shallow out and the backside comeback as checkdowns.
Defensive Reads
Read the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety shaded toward the bunch signals cover 3 or man match and tells you the corner route has a favorable window over the top. Watch for the corner or slot defender jumping the post route early, that indicates man coverage or a cover 2 look where the corner should sit in his flat responsibility. If you see two deep safeties splitting the field evenly with no rotation post snap, that is your cover 2 or cover 4 trigger to let the corner route work behind the underneath defenders. Nano blitzes or a linebacker creeping toward the bunch pre snap are the biggest threat since empty sets have no extra blocker, get the ball out on the shallow out or comeback quickly if you see this. This concept is shut down by disciplined cover 4 quarters teams that keep two deep safeties and have corners with strong outside leverage discipline to squeeze the post corner combo.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to force the defense to declare man or zone before the snap since empty bunch formations naturally bait blitz calls. Key the safety over the bunch side, if he bites on the post the corner route sits behind him for an explosive gain, if he stays high sit the post in the window before the corner clears. Against man coverage hot route the shallow out receiver into a slant or drag to punish inside leverage defenders and create natural rub action off the bunch traffic. This play pairs well with Jailbreak Screen and RPO Q Screen Draw in the same set since both punish teams that bring pressure at empty, giving you a built in answer if the defense overloads one side. Best called on second and medium or third and long when you need a big chunk play and can afford to hold the ball for a double move to develop.
