Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two high safeties or rotating to single high, since Cover 4 shells with soft corners are the primary target for the wheel route beating outside leverage. If the defense shows man coverage with a linebacker or safety trailing the bunch, hot route the wheel runner to a quick out or bend the drive route earlier to avoid the wheel getting picked up in trail technique. Use this play on second or third and medium situations where the underneath drive route has room to work if the wheel is taken away by a deep half safety. Pair this with Drive Y Corner or Stutter Wheel from the same set to keep defenses guessing between wheel routes and corner breaking routes, forcing zone defenders to hesitate on flat drops. Look to attack Cover 4 specifically since the wheel route naturally exploits the seam between the flat defender and deep quarter defender before that defender can pattern match effectively.
