Y Off Trips puts three receivers to one side with the tight end offset in the backfield next to the quarterback, which is the key structural difference from standard Shotgun Trips looks. Instead of the Y being attached to the line or split into the trips bunch, he sits as a second backfield body, giving you a legitimate two back shell out of 11 personnel. That alignment forces the defense to declare early: if they treat it as a pass set, you get downhill gap runs with the tight end as a lead blocker, and if they walk a defender into the box, you have three receivers to the strong side with only two underneath defenders capable of matching them.
The trips side is where the concept work lives. Stick, Deep Stick Out, All Curl, Curls, and Return Curls all stack horizontal and vertical stems into the same coverage zone, and because the inside slot has a free release from an off alignment, you get clean hi lo and stick nod reads without fighting press. Four Verticals and Verticals Dig turn the same personnel into a vertical stretch, while Bounce Shallow Smash and Whip Smash attack Cover 2 and Cover 4 flat defenders with the corner and shallow pairing. The isolated single receiver on the weak side is the real matchup lever: with SLWR tagged, you can motion or hot route that X into a slant, fade, or streak against whatever leftover corner the defense assigns him, which is how you punish teams that rotate strength to the trips.
The run and RPO menu is what separates this set from pure pass formations. Duo, Counter Y, HB Counter, 0 1 Trap, Inside Zone Split, and Outside Zone all get the offset Y as a puller or lead blocker, and the Gadget and Power HB tags mean you can run HB Direct Snap or lean on heavy carries without switching personnel. RPO Glance Post, RPO Bubble Y Pop, RPO Read WR Screen, RPO Counter Glance Post, and RPO Duo Alert Glance let you conflict the box defender pre snap and take the free throw when he crashes, and the screen package (HB Swing Screen, HB Slip Screen, Mtn Y Screen, Fake Screen Wheel) keeps aggressive blitzers honest.
Read the weak side corner first: if he presses the isolated X with no safety help, take the one on one and abandon the trips concept entirely
On early downs against a light box, lean on Duo, Counter Y, and Inside Zone Split to make the defense commit an extra hat, then punish that commitment with RPO Glance Post or RPO Bubble Y Pop
Against Cover 3 and Cover 4 on third and medium, run Stick, Mtn Stick, or Return Curls and work the trips side high low, hot routing the outside receiver on a comeback if the corner sits deep
Pair Four Verticals and Verticals Dig with a pre snap motion to identify man versus zone, then hit the seam against single high or the dig against two high
When opponents start bringing heat, alternate HB Slip Screen, Fake Screen Wheel, and PA Zone Shot off the same run looks to reset their aggression and get chunk plays
