The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, stepping in unison toward the play side to create movement and seal off gaps, while the trips receivers and TE stay uninvolved as decoys to widen the defensive front. The primary read progression is the RB pressing the initial hole and reading the flow of the offensive line, bouncing outside if the interior is clogged or cutting back if backside pursuit overcommits.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive tackles shading hard to one gap pre-snap, since that signals a slanting front designed to blow up zone steps. Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits at depth reading mesh point he can be user controlled to fill the cutback lane and kill the run. Man coverage on the outside with no extra run support in the box is where this play hits hardest, since the defense lacks numbers to stop zone flow. Against a 6 or 7 man box in base 4-3 or 3-4, trust the line to create movement and let the RB find the natural crease rather than forcing it. Cover 3 or Cover 1 with an overloaded box and a spying linebacker at the mesh point is the biggest threat, since a well timed user fill can stop this before it develops.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into flowing early and revealing run blitz intentions.

Call this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are likely sitting in base personnel.

If the defense shows a stacked box with 8 or more defenders pre-snap, consider hot routing a receiver into a quick screen or checking to a pass instead.

Pair Inside Zone with HB Zone Toss and Outside Zone from the same set to keep linebackers guessing on run direction and force them to respect edge speed.

Sequence this run with RPO Bubble Y Pop or RPO Read WR Screen later in the drive so defenders who crashed down on Inside Zone get punished by the pass tag off similar formation.
