All Curl out of Shotgun Y Off Trips is a curl based zone beater that sends four receivers on curl routes at staggered depths to sit down in the soft spots of Cover 3 and Cover 4 zones. The trips side creates natural picks and spacing conflicts for zone defenders, while the backside receiver runs an isolated curl for a quick access throw against man coverage as well. Primary read progression starts with the trips side curl combo working outside in, reading the flat defender and hook defender to determine which curl sits open, then working back to the backside curl if the underneath defenders squeeze the trips concept.
Look for two deep safeties and soft corner alignment pre-snap, which signals Cover 4 or Cover 2 zone drops that leave the curl windows wide open. If you see a single high safety with corners playing tight technique, expect Cover 3 or man coverage underneath, so key the flat defender and hook defender to see if they widen or sink to take away the curl breaks. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in a lurk spot near the trips side hook zone, since that defender can jump the inside curl route and bait a costly interception. Nano blitzes or five man pressure packages disrupt this play because the quarterback needs time for receivers to settle into their curl breaks, so identify blitz alignments pre-snap and be ready to check into a quicker hot route or throw the backside curl immediately. Man coverage with an aggressive underneath robber shuts this concept down quickly, so if you see man match principles post-snap, move off the curl reads and consider a hot route audible into a speed out or slant instead.
Attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells since the curls settle right on top of the underneath zone droppers and create simple triangle reads. Use the trips bunch look pre-snap to identify if the defense is playing zone with soft corners sitting off, which tells you the curls will have room to sit down for easy completions. Hot route the backside curl into a dig or in route if you see man coverage on that receiver since a static curl is an easy jump route for a user defender in man. This play pairs well with Return Curls and Curls in the same set to keep defenders guessing on curl depth and timing without changing your formation tendencies. Best called on second and medium to long or third and medium, since the sit routes need a few extra ticks to develop and offensive line protection on quick game five step drops. Combine with Four Verticals or PA Zone Shot from this set to punish defenses that start jumping the curl routes after seeing it on tape.
