RPO Duo Alert Glance is a run pass option built off the Duo blocking scheme out of Shotgun Y Off Trips, giving the quarterback a give or throw decision based on the second level defender leverage. The offensive line executes double team blocks at the point of attack typical of Duo, while the alert tag adds a glance route (a skinny post breaking away from a slot defender) as the pass option read. The primary progression is presnap box count and second level fill, then postsnap key on the alert defender: if he crashes down on the run fit, pull and throw the glance behind him, if he sits or bails, hand the ball off into the Duo run lane.

Defensive Reads

Watch the alert defender, usually a slot corner or overhang linebacker, immediately after the snap since his run or pass reaction determines the entire play. Presnap, look at safety depth and rotation, a single high safety with the corner playing the run first is the green light to trust the glance. If the defense shows two deep safeties with the slot defender staying home in coverage, take the give and trust the Duo double teams to win up front. Man coverage with no help over the slot is where the glance route wins consistently since it attacks the seam before help can rotate over. Beware disguised blitzes and nano packages where the alert defender's assignment is late crashing linebackers, since those force a quick decision and can blow up both the run and pass option if you hesitate.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and count defenders in the tackle box against your blockers, this tells you whether the run or the glance is the higher percentage call. Identify single high versus two high shells, since single high safeties tend to cheat toward the run fit and open up the glance window behind them. Use the hot route menu to adjust the outside trips receivers into simple hitches or clear out routes if you need extra spacing for the glance read. This play works best on early downs (first and second and short to medium) when defenses are more willing to load the box, punishing overaggressive linebackers with the alert throw. Pair this with Bounce Duo, Inside Zone, and RPO Bubble Y Pop in the same set so defenses cannot sit on one keyed run fit, then mix in RPO Read Y Flat or RPO Glance Post to keep the alert defender guessing.
