Bounce Y Stick is a run play out of the Shotgun Y Off Trips 11 personnel look, taking the traditional HB run and bouncing it to attack the edge with a lead blocker in front of the ball carrier. The trips side to the play side provides extra numbers on the perimeter for cutback lanes if the initial edge gets clogged, while the offensive line works zone steps to seal the interior before the back bounces outside. The primary read progression starts with the play side edge defender: if he crashes down, bounce it wide behind the lead blocker, and if he stays home, look to cut it back through the vacated interior gap.
Key the play side defensive end or outside linebacker first since his run fit decision dictates whether the ball carrier bounces or cuts back inside. Watch for a hard edge set from the defense which forces the back to cut back into a potentially crowded box, killing the bounce lane. Look for overhang defenders or a slot corner in trips coverage cheating down into the run fit, which signals the defense is selling out to stop the edge. User controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side trips can leave the cutback lane wide open, so be ready to trust the interior if the edge is sealed. This run struggles against fast flow linebackers and disciplined gap exchange defenses that keep contain while still filling the cutback lane.
Use this against defenses that show heavy interior run fits or stacked boxes since the bounce action attacks the edge where trips alignment pulls defenders away from the core.
Motion is not needed here, but check the safety alignment pre-snap to confirm if the defense is in a one high shell that leaves the edge thinner in run support.
Manually control the lead blocker after the snap to seal the first defender off the edge and create a clean bounce lane for the HB.
Pair this with RPO Bubble Y Pop or RPO Read WR Screen from the same set to keep defenses honest on outside run fits before hitting them with the bounce.
Best called on early downs in normal or run heavy personnel situations, especially against defenses that are keying inside zone or Duo tendencies from previous snaps.
