Sprint Flood out of Shotgun Y Off Trips is a three level flood concept to the trips side with a sprint out action from the quarterback. The trips receivers stack a deep corner route, an intermediate out from the slot (shown in red as the primary), and a flat route from the innermost receiver, while the backside single receiver runs a dig style in route across the field. This is a Cover 3 beater built to attack the flat to deep quarter defender with high low leverage, and the primary read progresses from the corner route down to the intermediate out and finally to the flat as the QB works on the move.
Identify single high safety pre snap since that usually signals Cover 3 and confirms the flood side will stress the deep third defender with two receivers stacked at different depths. Watch the flat defender post snap, if he sinks with the out route the flat is wide open for an easy checkdown throw. Beware of Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with two deep safeties, since the corner route can get taken away and the sideline gets condensed for the underneath routes. User controlled defenders sitting in the shallow zone lurking the flat can bait the QB into an interception if he stares down the checkdown. Watch for blitz packages sending extra rushers off the sprint out side, since that pressure can collapse the pocket before the QB has time to climb the route progression.
Call this on second or third and medium when you expect a zone shell, since the sprint out action buys the QB time to work the flood side full field. Check pre snap for single high safeties rotating late, since that tips Cover 3 and confirms the flood concept will have soft spots underneath the corner route. Hot route the backside dig into a deeper dig or comeback if you see the corner playing off man across from him, giving you a true two way go against man coverage. Use the sprint out rollover to buy extra time against delayed blitzes, but throw the ball on time to the out route if the flat defender sinks too quickly. Pair this play with PA Y Flood or Strong Flood in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game flood reads and play action shot plays off similar route distribution.
