RPO Counter Alert Shock is an RPO built off a Counter run action, giving the quarterback a run-pass conflict read at the mesh point. The diagram shows the tight end running a shallow drag under the line while the counter action develops behind the offensive line, with the outside receiver stemming vertically up the numbers into a corner or go route and the slot receiver on the trips side running a quick out or curl breaking back to the quarterback. The backside receiver runs a vertical stem as well, stretching the field to hold the deep defenders. This is a true RPO alert concept, so the primary read starts with the box count and second level defenders: if the linebackers crash down on the counter action, pull and throw off the alert route to the outside, and if the box stays honest, hand off the counter for a downhill run.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebackers stacked tight to the box pre-snap since aggressive run fits are what make the alert throw available. Identify single high safety looks before the snap because it tells you the corner on the vertical stem is on an island with no deep help. Post-snap, track whether the linebackers step up hard into the counter gap or stay patient in coverage drops, since patient linebackers shut down both the run and the shallow route. User controlled defenders sitting in the throwing lane of the alert route can bait a bad pull decision, so respect a lurking user linebacker if he shows depth instead of crashing. Cover 3 or Cover 1 with an overhang blitzer is the toughest shell to beat here since it defends the run fit and squeezes the alert throw simultaneously.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and count defenders in the box against your run blockers to decide if the counter hand off is viable.

Key the will linebacker or nearest second level defender at the snap since his flow decides whether you pull and throw or ride the run.

Use the alert route to attack single high shells where the corner has to respect the vertical stem, opening the underlying zone beater route for an easy completion.

Pair this call with HB Counter or Duo earlier in a drive to sell the same backfield action, then come back to this RPO once the defense starts keying run flow.

Best used on early downs in standard or nickel personnel where linebackers are more likely to bite on run action, giving you a clean pull read.
