RPO Counter Alert Shock is a run-pass option out of Shotgun Y Off Trips that pairs a Counter run scheme with a two-man alert route package to the trips side. The offensive line pulls and blocks Counter to the weak side while the backside receiver runs a vertical seam and the inside slot man cuts a quick out at the sticks, giving the quarterback a run-or-throw decision based on the alley defender's leverage. This is an RPO built to attack light boxes and aggressive linebackers, with the primary read being the flow of the second level defender: if he steps up to fill Counter, the quarterback pulls and fires the seam or out route, and if he stays home in coverage, the quarterback hands off Counter.
Watch the alley defender or first linebacker inside the box, his downhill trigger on run action is the actual RPO key the offense is reading Man coverage on the outside seam route is vulnerable since there is no help over the top if the safety bites on run action Zone shells with a linebacker sitting at the sticks can jump the quick out route and cut off the short RPO throw Disciplined linebackers who stay square and read the mesh point take away the entire RPO element and force this into a stuffed run A blitz off the edge or a nano blitz through the counter lane can beat the pulling linemen before the read even develops
Check the box count before the snap and only key the run if you have a numbers advantage away from the trips call
Use the alert route as your true first read since a linebacker crashing downhill on Counter action opens the seam or out immediately
Against single-high shells with the safety cheating toward the trips side, trust the handoff since the alley defender is often occupied
Pair this call with Inside Zone or HB Counter earlier in a drive so the defense respects the run action and bites harder on the RPO key
Use this on early downs in run-favorable distances like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep defenses honest and force linebacker hesitation
