Slants out of Shotgun Y Off Trips lines up three receivers to the trips side with the backside X running a slant across the field as well, giving you four total slants converging over the middle. The trips side stacks two inside slants breaking toward the same window while the outside trips receiver also bends his slant into that traffic, and the backside X runs a mirrored slant from the opposite side, creating a natural pick concept against man coverage. This is a man beater built on rub routes and quick access throws, with the primary read starting on the inside trips slant working outside to the second slant, then flashing to the backside X slant if the defense flows hard to the trips side.
Read the corner and slot defender alignment before the snap, tight man coverage or press alignment tells you the picks from the stacked slants will spring someone open immediately. Post-snap, key the underneath linebackers and nickel defenders in the middle of the field since Tampa 2 or Cover 3 sink drops can squat directly in the throwing lane of the crossing slants. Watch for a user-controlled defender flowing hard to the trips side pre-snap, which opens up the backside X slant as a quick answer against a defense that overloads the strong side. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge but leave the middle of the field vacated get gashed by the quick slant timing, so identify blitz looks by counting the box and checking for a walked-up linebacker. Cover 4 or match quarters shells with disciplined underneath defenders who sit in throwing lanes and refuse to bite on the pick action are the toughest look for this concept, since the picks lose value when defenders stay square and pass off assignments cleanly.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with corners in press or tight trail alignment, since the stacked slants create natural picks that spring receivers open against man. Use the flick hot route on the outside trips receiver if you see a hard corner sitting on the slant to convert it into a quick out and keep the defense honest. Attack this play on third and short or third and medium when defenders are playing tight to the sticks and unwilling to sit deep in zone. Pair this call with Curls or Return Curls from the same set to give zone defenses a different answer if they start jumping the underneath slant windows. Watch for Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells pre-snap since the flat defenders can undercut the shallow slant crossers, and be ready to layer the throw over the top of the nearest linebacker or nickel.
